The Amalfi Coast is, without a doubt, one of the most breathtaking places on Earth to explore on two wheels. However, at Rent in Costa, our primary mission is not just to rent scooters, but to ensure that our guests enjoy their holiday safely.

The SS163 “Amalfi Drive” is a legendary road, but it is also a challenging one. It requires skill, confidence, and, above all, previous experience. We want to be very clear with our future guests: The Amalfi Coast is not the place to learn how to ride a scooter.

Our Strict Safety Policy: No Experience, No Rental

To protect our customers and our fleet, we maintain a strict rental policy. Even if you have a confirmed and paid reservation, we reserve the right to cancel the rental on the spot if the rider demonstrates insufficient riding skills during the initial test.

In such cases, safety takes precedence over the booking. Riding here without experience is a risk we are not willing to let you take.

Why Experience is Mandatory on the Amalfi Coast

Driving here is different from riding in a quiet suburb or a flat city. Here is why you need a solid background in scooter or motorcycle riding:

1. The “Hairpin” Challenge The road between Positano, Amalfi, and Ravello consists of hundreds of tight, blind curves. Maneuvering a scooter (especially with a passenger) through these hairpins requires an understanding of “leaning” and throttle control that only comes with practice.

2. Heavy Traffic and Large Vehicles You will be sharing narrow lanes with massive SITA buses and delivery trucks. These vehicles often need to use the entire width of the road to clear a corner. A beginner’s instinct is often to panic or brake abruptly; an experienced rider knows how to anticipate these movements and stay safe.

3. Steep Inclines and Declines The roads to towns like Ravello or Agerola are steep. Managing your brakes on a long descent without overheating them, or starting on an uphill slope with a passenger, requires technical familiarity with the vehicle.

How to Evaluate Your Own Skill Level

Before booking your Vespa experience, ask yourself the following questions:

  • Have I ridden a scooter or motorcycle in the last 12 months?

  • Am I comfortable balancing a vehicle that weighs over 100kg with a passenger on the back?

  • Do I have experience with “stop-and-go” traffic on hills?

  • Am I confident in my ability to handle narrow spaces?

If the answer to any of these is “No,” we strongly recommend using alternative transport like ferries or private drivers. We want your memories of Italy to be about the beauty of the coast, not a stressful or dangerous situation on the road.

The “On-Site Check”: What Happens at Pick-up?

When you arrive at Rent in Costa to collect your scooter, our team will conduct a brief briefing. We will ask you to demonstrate:

  1. Basic balance and control of the scooter.

  2. Confident braking and turning.

  3. The ability to use the kickstand and manage the vehicle’s weight.

If our staff determines that your riding level poses a danger to yourself or others, the rental will be denied. We believe in transparency, and we want you to know this before you book.

Preparation Tips for Experienced Riders

If you are an experienced rider, the Amalfi Coast will be the highlight of your life. To make the most of it:

  • Study the Rules: Familiarize yourself with local ZTL (Limited Traffic Zones). Our Amalfi Coast Parking Guide is a great place to start.

  • Plan Your Route: Know where you are going to avoid looking at your GPS while riding. Check our 7-Day Itinerary for the best paths.

  • Wear Gear: We provide high-quality helmets. Even in the heat, we recommend closed shoes and protective clothing.

Conclusion: We Care About Your Journey

We aren’t just a rental shop; we are locals who love this land and want you to love it too. By being honest about the difficulty of these roads, we ensure that the people who do rent from us have the best, safest, and most unforgettable experience possible.
