Do you need a motorcycle license to rent a scooter on the Amalfi Coast? Not for a 125cc. With Rent in Costa, a standard car license (category B) or an A1 license lets you ride our 125cc scooters and the Vespa Primavera 125; the Vespa 300 needs an A or A2 motorcycle license. If your license was issued outside the European Union, bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) too. A 125cc scooter starts from €50 a day, with helmets for two, full tank, third-party insurance and unlimited mileage included, and you book online.

At a glance

  • Car license (B) or A1: 125cc scooter (from €50/day) and Vespa Primavera 125 (€60/day)
  • A or A2 license: Vespa 300 (€90/day)
  • Minimum age 18; non-EU licenses also need an International Driving Permit
  • Included: full tank, helmets for rider and passenger, third-party insurance, unlimited mileage
  • No security deposit: just a physical credit card in the rider’s name at pick-up

What you can ride with your license

All of them are automatic: no clutch, no gears. You book the exact model you want to ride; the color depends on availability.

I only have a car license: what can I rent?

With a category B car license you can rent both our 125cc scooter and the Vespa Primavera 125. This is the most common case: most visitors only drive a car at home, and a 125cc is all you need to get around Amalfi, Ravello and Positano. It’s light, it slips into motorbike parking bays and it handles the bends of the SS163 coast road well.

If you’ve always dreamed of a Vespa, the Primavera 125 is your ride: same classic look, same license as the scooter. Compare the two Vespas on our Vespa rental on the Amalfi Coast page.

When you need an A or A2 license

The Vespa 300 is bigger and more powerful, so it requires an A or A2 motorcycle license. It’s the pick for people who already ride motorbikes and travel two-up every day: on the climbs to Ravello or Agerola with a passenger, you feel the difference.

No A or A2? No problem. A 125cc scooter or the Vespa Primavera will take you everywhere on the coast, two-up included; you just take the hills a little more calmly.

Licenses issued outside the EU (USA, Canada, Australia…)

If your license was issued outside the European Union, for example in the United States, Canada or Australia, you need to bring an International Driving Permit along with your original license. The IDP is issued in the country that issued your license, so get it before you travel: you can’t get one once you’re on the Amalfi Coast.

At pick-up we’ll ask for your original license, your IDP and a physical credit card in the rider’s name. Not sure about your license? Message us on WhatsApp before you book and we’ll tell you straight away which scooter you can ride.

Other requirements

  • You must be at least 18 years old.
  • A physical credit card in the rider’s name (no deposit is taken).
  • Some experience on two wheels: the Amalfi Coast is stunning, but it’s not the place to learn. If you’ve never ridden before, read our scooter safety guide first.

Before you go, also check the Amalfi Coast traffic and ZTL rules for 2026: scooters get around far more freely than cars.

How it works

  1. Pick the scooter that matches your license and your dates online, and pay securely.
  2. Choose where you want it: delivery in Agerola is free; for the other towns, including Amalfi port and hotels, the fee is shown when you choose the location while booking.
  3. At pick-up show your license (plus IDP if needed) and credit card, sign the contract and ride off with two helmets.
  4. Return by 8:00 pm on your last day. If your plans change, date changes are free and unlimited.
